About the project

EqLume is a small menu-bar app that equalizes all of a Mac's audio in real time. In automatic mode it reads what's playing — Spotify, Apple Music, supported browsers — and switches to a matching genre profile, with a live spectrum and the active curve on screen. Audio is processed in memory, never recorded or uploaded. It's free, with no ads or tracking.

The engineering

System audio is captured with a Core Audio process tap and a private aggregate device, run through AVAudioUnitEQ and played to the real output — no virtual driver, no kernel extension. Genre comes from MusicBrainz votes, then the iTunes catalogue, then (in the open-source build) an on-device CoreML classifier. Every preset is one measured headphone baseline plus a small genre adjustment, cuts only, with a limiter after the EQ, and each output device keeps its own profile. It builds with plain swiftc from one source tree into two flavours, and idles at about 1.4% of one core.
